Combining Cat-5 with Cat-6 Networks Question
Form : http://www.chinadropwire.com/ Author: Time:2008-10-8 20:18:22Question:We are currently running a 10/100 Network. We want to add a second Gigabit card in two of the computers and connect them with a Cat-6 crossover cable to take advantage of faster data transfer.
Will this work? or Should we just buy the Cat-6 hub and take out the Cat-5 card?
Reply:Yes it will work quite well but the computer with the Gigabit connection will be relegated to the 10/100 MBS connection when accessing any of the other computers so if you are thinking of using it as something like a File Server or Internet gateway then you are wasting your money. But if it is only required to be accessed by the other computer then the higher speed connection will work a charm and quite easily.
Just an after thought depending on the M'Board there may be some compatibility problems with a 10/100 and Gigabit LAN cards particularly if the 10/100 T Base is on-board. But if they are both PCI cards they should work or if there is a Gigabit LAN connection on-board you will have no problems
